What makes Skipadee The Dragonfly Hopscotch ® Reusable Playground Stencil special?

Durability

Our stencils are made of a thick, commercial grade material that is semi-rigid and durable. Depending on how well they are maintained, and following some of our tips, like chalking out the lines rather than going right to paint, they can be reused numerous times.

Paint Options

We recommend buying paint from us for the best results. Our commercial-grade Sherwin-Williams paint is color-matched, skid-resistant, and includes supplies like brushes, rollers, and trays. We also offer spray paint cans in similar colors.

Application Instructions

All of our Reusable Stencils include illustrated and video application instructions, and includes information about how many people are needed to paint and how much time is needed.  Many of our Reusable Stencils can be applied in a variety of ways.

Game Ideas

All of our Reusable Stencils include activities and game ideas that can be used to provide a framework for children to create games and activities of their own.

Maintaining Your Stencils

Our Reusable Stencils feature a thin film coating that can be used and removed after application to make clean-up easy. We provide additional information on maintaining and cleaning.

Storage

Storage of our Reusable Stencils depends on how it is shipped, but all stencils should be opened and unrolled immediately upon receipt, to ensure best results. Stencils should be stored flat where possible, or loosely rolled.

Frequently Asked Questions About Playground Stencils

Answer to common questions about our Playground Stencils

What are the stencils made of?

All of our Reusable Stencils are made of high-quality, commercial-grade plastic and are manufactured in the U.S.

They are thick enough to be durable, and thin enough to use, roll, and store.

What kind of pavement surfaces can I paint on?

This is a very important question. The following surfaces are typically compatible with the paint we sell.

  • Asphalt, unsealed that has aged several months (90 days typically), unless passes adhesion test.
  • Asphalt, sealed that has properly cured (90 days typically) and is
compatible with the paint provided, unless passes adhesion test.
  • Concrete, unsealed, cured for at least 28 days.
  • Some other masonry surfaces (see manufacturer's information on can).

It is the customer's responsibility to check that this paint is capable with the pavement being painted.

How many times can the Reusable Stencils be reused?

Depending on how well they are maintained, and following some of our tips, like chalking out the lines rather than going right to paint, they can be reused numerous times.

All Reusable Stencil purchases include a limited multi-use site license for up to 10 sites. Please contact Fit and Fun Playscapes to obtain information on additional license fees, if applicable. With specific permission, yes. We can typically do that for no additional costs on a case-by-case basis. We ask that site-specific information be provided to us so we can keep a record of it, in case there are any issues. Please review our multi-site license if you plan to share your stencils.

How should I clean and care for the Stencils?
  • The best way to keep the stencils clean is to avoid over-applying paint as you use them. If you avoid applying a lot of paint all at once it will help not only with the final painted image, but also make cleanup and storage of the stencils easier.
  • Wipe up excess liquid paint as you are painting by using rags or a car-washing sponge and a large bucket of water. Rinse the rag or sponge often and change the water periodically. Don't forget to wring it out after each rinse. Be careful to not wipe the freshly painted surface you are painting.
  • Don't be concerned about a thin coat of paint that lays on the surface of the stencil. Paint that is "puddling" or collecting on the edges of the stencil is more of a concern. Carefully wipe up the excess paint with some paper towels, if need be.
  • If you have access to a hose and a washing area available, hose off as much of the excess paint as possible. Only do this once you've moved your stencils away from the painted image. Don't wash your stencil where the paint would leave unsightly residue on surfaces.
  • Don't let dry paint on the stencil edges concern you. It is still usable the next time. If stencil edges have accumulated dried paint, simply pick off the larger, dried pieces. An even coat of paint remaining on the edge of the stencil image is typically not a problem.
  • Paint build-up on the edges of the stencil cutout may be removed by using something like a butter knife. Carefully glide the butter knife or other suitable
type of tool with just enough pressure along the edge that has paint-build-up, gently scraping along the edge of the stencil. If stencil breaks during this process, stop immediately. Note that you only need to remove caked-on paint that would clearly affect the finished, painted image - not every surface. You may also want to perform this task over a drop cloth to catch the scrapings.
  • If using spray paint we sell and in accordance with our application instructions, there should be no significant build up. It's likely going to be dry before you can clean it. In fact, we've used one of our stencils dozens of times and let the paint build-up on the protective film and after a while, it simply flakes off as you handle the stencil. Before painting a new surface, remove loose flakes by gently shaking the stencil over plastic sheeting, away from where you are painting, where it can be collected and disposed. The flakes could blow into the area where you are applying fresh paint.
  • 👊 PRO-TIP: The stencil comes with a protective film on both sides. If the sight of paint staying on the stencil really bothers you, then you can peel off that film and dispose of it, leaving your stencil a tad more visually appealing. You only
get to remove the protective film once so choose wisely. :)
  • 👊 PRO-TIP: If you plan to paint numerous times, consider chalking out the patterns, remove stencil then paint.

❗ WARNING: Never use harsh chemicals to clean stencils as that may damage the material

How long do the stencils last?

If used with the paint products we sell and cleaned according to the instructions provided, they should last for several years.

We’ve been selling stencils for over 14 years and have had very few reports of stencils breaking or not working properly, and the few that have were found to be from significant abuse such as putting heavy objects on a roll of stencils, using caustic cleaners and some spray paints, or allowing thick coats of paint to build up on the material.

Are the stencils meant for indoor or outdoor use?

The Reusable Stencils are typically painted outdoors on pavement or concrete, and are designed with that intended use in mind.

However, if you choose to use the stencils indoors, we recommend using a different paint that is compatible with your surface(s). It is best in this case to seek advice from a professional painter and your local Sherwin-Williams store as to the best paint for your particular surface material.
